An Unexpected Taste of Cali in Sunset Heights (Brooklyn)

If you ask any Californian living in the North East about some of the things they miss about living in California, you’ll receive a few standard replies.  The weather will be one of the first (especially amidst negative 10 degrees outside with windchill), perhaps decent customer service will come up, or having a car (although that is one of the things that I like about the NE).  Undoubtedly though, you’ll almost certainly hear that Californians living in the NE (and especially NYC) miss the Mexican Food.  When I complain about this, a lot of New Yorkers will tell me we have GREAT Mexican food, what are you talking about?  And ever since Chipolte arrived to the east coast a few years ago, New Yorkers seem to think their arguement has strengthened.  But let me say this now, and in writing… Chipolte is NOT authentic mexican food, it is a passable Americanized burrito, similar to the Sweet and Sour Chicken you’d find at Panda Express.  Rosa Mexicano and Dos Caminos are waaaay over priced Mexican food.  Paying $20 for a plate of chicken enchiladas is not my idea of “authentic.”  Ask any Mexican living in San Diego if they’d pay that and they’d laugh in your face.
